According to Focus, a program broadcast by CCTV, employees at a Wintek factory in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, went on strike in mid-January 2010 and this sparked the exposure of n-hexane poisoning cases at the factory. Zhang Lisheng, the deputy general manager of Wintek China, is reported as saying that the striking employees were mainly protesting the company’s cancellation of year-end bonus, and the company denied that the employees’ protest was to do with n-hexane poisoning. However Lu Zhenwei, the director of Suzhou Industrial Park Safety Production Management Bureau admitted that some employees at the company were indeed affected by n-hexane poisoning.

Analysts estimate that fewer than 5 percent of the HDTVs sold in the United States last year can go online to pull in movies and television shows, bypassing traditional cable and satellite TV service. Now, however, the idea of an Internet-ready home entertainment setup has a powerful new backer: Wal-Mart. The retail giant said on Monday that it had agreed to buy Vudu, a Silicon Valley start-up whose three-year-old online movie service is being built into an increasing number of televisions and Blu-ray players. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, but a person briefed on the deal said the price for the company, which raised $60 million in capital, was over $100 million.

Malone to AFACT: You lose, you pay ZDNet Australia
iiNet managing director Michael Malone said today that the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft (AFACT) shouldn’t be able to get out of paying for its failed attempt to sue the provider over copyright breach. “We didn’t ask to be sued. They came to us and sued us and they lost, so I don’t see why we should be paying any of their legal expenses,” Malone told ZDNet.com.au today. The company reported in its half-year earnings that it had forked out $5.7 million in legal costs defending the case. While iiNet’s insurance reduced its exposure to $3.7 million, AFACT and the 34 applicants that took part in the litigation may be left with the full bill, including its own costs to date. AFACT intends this Thursday to try and trim its legal bills, arguing to the Federal Court that it should not face costs incurred for portions of the hearing that were not decided in iiNet’s favour — for example, the legal costs incurred while iiNet was still denying that its customers had breached copyright while using its service.

The Federal Trade Commission has notified almost 100 organizations that personal information, including sensitive data about customers and/or employees, has been shared from the organizations’ computer networks and is available on peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing networks to any users of those networks, who could use it to commit identity theft or fraud. The agency also has opened non-public investigations of other companies whose customer or employee information has been exposed on P2P networks. To help businesses manage the security risks presented by file-sharing software, the FTC is releasing new education materials that present the risks and recommend ways to manage them. Peer-to-peer technology can be used in many ways, such as to play games, make online telephone calls, and, through P2P file-sharing software, share music, video, and documents. But when P2P file-sharing software is not configured properly, files not intended for sharing may be accessible to anyone on the P2P network.

The Copyright (Infringing File Sharing) Amendment Bill repeals Section 92A and replaces it with a three-notice regime which is intended to deter illegal file sharing.

“This amendment puts in place a fair and balanced process to deal with online copyright infringements occurring via file sharing,” Mr Power says.

“The major feature is the three-notice process, which educates the public about illegal file sharing and provides effective methods for copyright owners to enforce their copyright.

“It ensures that file sharers are given adequate warnings that unauthorised sharing of copyright works is illegal.”

The bill also extends the jurisdiction of the Copyright Tribunal, enabling it to hear complaints and award penalties of up to $15,000 based on the amount of damage sustained by the copyright owner.

Mr Power says the bill will also enable copyright owners to seek the suspension of internet accounts through the District Court for up to six months.

“It’s important that account holders are given a reasonable time to stop infringing before enforcement takes place.

“The bill prescribes timeframes so account holders have the opportunity to address illegal file sharing activity occurring on their internet connection before enforcement action is taken.

“They will also have the chance to challenge notices and may request hearings at the Copyright Tribunal to contest infringement claims.

“Regulations will outline the awards the tribunal may make and they’ll be drafted later this year when the bill has been enacted.

“Online copyright infringement is a problem for everyone, but especially for the creative industry, which has experienced significant declines in revenue as file sharing has become more prevalent.

“This bill is the result of extensive consultation with stakeholders and is an important step in addressing a complex issue”, Power adds.

Because he’s retired, there would “really be no point” to an investigation of the plagiarism accusations, the Chronicle of Higher Education has Malone spokeswoman Suzanne Thomas stating.

“Ms. Thomas said Malone’s Board of Trustees had created a plan for how the college would proceed after it accepted Mr. Streit’s offer to retire over the weekend”, says the story, going on she said “concerns about plagiarism became public after students noticed similarities between a chapel address given by Mr. Streit on January 13 and online work written by others”.

Malone University is “located in the quiet, safe, residential neighborhood of Canton, Ohio – population approximately 90,000″, says its site.
